Ladyfest 2012

Buffy - in desert

Two years ago, in 2010, hazyflights hosted a ficathon that celebrated women from all fandoms. The response was phenomenal, and hundreds of fics got written. I decided I wanted to host a ficathon; in particular, I wanted to revive this ficathon because it was the one that actually got me writing. So here it is . . .

The Awesome Ladies Ficathon and Art-a-thon 2012!

Here are the rules, adapted from hazyflights:

1. Post prompts! Given the nature of this ficathon, your prompt must focus on a woman, any woman, from fandom or RPF. Format them as such: fandom, character(s) [+ pairings, romanti if any], your choice of prompt be it a lyric, a word, etc.
ETA: Prompts should be in the following format in the text of the comment: fandom(s) - character(s) or pairing(s) - prompt (like song lyrics or a situation or something brief so the author has to make up the plot of the comment fic).
2. Answer prompts! Though you do not need one to write. They're there to serve as inspiration. Post away with or without one. Fics need to posted with a line in the following format in bold at the top of your post: fandom, character(s) [+ pairings if any], "title", rating. Also more than one person can respond to the same prompt.
ETA: OR if you'd like to leave icons or graphics as fills for prompts, go right ahead! Just list the fandom and characters at the top of the post!
3. LEAVE FEEDBACK. Let the author know if you liked their fic, an angel will get its wings if you do, FACT.
4. Beware of spoilers. /sole warning.
5. This is a pimp code. Use it. The more the merrier basically.

6. If any questions arise direct them to the first comment. I'll answer them as soon as I can.
7. When leaving feedback/replying to fic please make sure you hit reply and don't post your feedback as another comment all together. It will (a) get lost in the meme and (b) the author might not even see it.
8. HAVE FUN!

I was really bored while livejournal was down over the weekend so I made a gazillion fandom-specific banners for the ficathon. If your favorite character or fandom isn't there, let me know, and I can probably whip something up pretty quick. If you'd like to make banners, that's absolutely awesome! They can say "The Awesome Ladies Ficathon 2012" or "Ladyfest 2012," whichever you think is cooler.

This is a great prompt, but I've made a format for prompts so that they'll be easier for authors to use their imaginations to fill! Anyway, thanks for getting us started!

Doctor Who, Harriet Jones + canon female character(s), I Knew One Day The Earth Would Be In Danger

Harriet discusses her decision to destroy the Sycorax ship with another (female) Doctor Who companion. Suggestions for the other woman/women: Sarah Jane Smith, Liz Shaw, Rose Tyler, Martha Jones.

Ooh, I like this prompt! This would be a great story, but I kind of made a new rule for prompts to make them easier for authors to fill. Hope that's cool!

It was another slow night. Willy the Snitch kept himself busy by polishing the bar and quietly contemplating the number of Sunnydale residents whose names began with a “W”.

He'd made it into the late teens when trouble suddenly arrived with a capital “B”. The Slayer booted the front doors open with her usual dramatic flair, rousting several customers from their boozy slumbers.

“Where is he?” she snarled.

“Where's who?” She gave him a look like she might answer with her fists. “Okay, okay, okay,” he said. “He's in the back.”

“Show me.”

Willy led her through the grungy little kitchenette and into the private lounge, mentally tabulating all the damages on his next insurance claim as they went. The air back there was thick with smoke and the musky smell of leather. Killy Idol was sprawled on a couch in the dark corner of the room near the pay phone, one leg draped lazily across an arm. The vamp nuzzled an empty bottle like it was a teddy bear, blissfully unaware of the ten-alarm fire about to explode all over him. Spike had paid handsomely to put him up for the night, and extra to keep the Slayer off his trail. Now that Willy was about to fail both ends of the bargain, he almost felt guilty about it; he figured anyone in this 'burg the Slayer was chasing usually had a damned good reason to run. And while Spike and Willy were never exactly best buds, he wasn't looking forward to vacuuming a fellow “W” off the floorboards.

It wasn't what he expected, though. For a few awkward moments, the Slayer just stood swaying in the doorway, a wet, faraway look in her eyes.

“Uh, so... you want me to give you guys some privacy?”

Buffy drifted away from him. There was something weird about the way she moved, the kind of exhausted grace you see in the last pair of dancers at a wedding. The world had grown eerily quiet except for the underwater jangle of a distant jukebox that bled softly through the walls. When she reached William the Bloody, she knelt beside him and gently combed her fingers through his hair.

Then, as the barkeep looked in slack-jawed amazement, Buffy plucked the empty bottle from Spike's hands and took its place. Her hard, war-weary eyes softened as she nestled her small body against his. The look on her face was something Willy had never seen there before, and never expected to see again. He struggled to slap a name on it, with no success. The vampire stirred slightly when she tugged his arm across her chest, but he'd socked away enough whiskey tonight to drown a Chirago demon. The Slayer had caught her prey tonight, same as always. And without a single punch thrown, it looked like they were both down for the count.

“Leave,” she said.

Willy closed the door behind him and locked it up tight. He took a more leisurely stroll back to the bar than he otherwise might've, thinking about the crazy, mixed-up state of affairs these days.

The world was ending. Again. Willy didn't have to snitch about that one; everybody already knew. Business had slowed to a trickle over the past few weeks, and any respectable monster who hadn't already fled town was talking his ear off about doing just that in between gulps of bitter poison. Some reminisced about the “good ol' days” of murder and mayhem. Others confessed a feeling of relief that the whole shebang would be over soon. They'd just lived a little too long, Willy figured, and seen a little too much. But what they hardly ever talked about was where they wanted to be when the “S” hit the “F” – when the big flood washed away everything that ever mattered.

When he reached the bar, the thought was still rattling around in his brain. So, he asked the first customer he saw, a guy with big, red antlers whose name he kept forgetting.

“Hey, so where do you wanna be? At the end of the world?”

The demon stared into his beer glass for a few seconds, thinking it over. “Home,” he said.

Willy sighed, and gave the guy a sad little nod.

“Yeah,” he said. “Good answer.”

AtS: Cordelia (+Angel, kinda), I Could Have Loved You, PG

It's a bit obvious but I hope it works anyway:

~~

He fired her and she moved on.

The visions still came and they rebuilt. Eventually they changed the name and the business card and there was never any hint that he’d been there at all.

Except for the occasional apocalypse that flared up, and died out just as quickly, Cordelia wouldn’t even know he was still in town. Except for the flashes of shadow out of the corner of her eye every few months, she never thought of him.

So when she’s walking down the street one Friday night on a date with a warrior on loan from another, less colorful, dimension, and she turns a corner and spots his familiar coat and his unfamiliar chocolate brown eyes, she might stop and stare, but only for a second, before moving on, before walking past him without the slight blink to betray the start her body gives.

She can do this because even though she might still dream about his cool hands reaching for her, she has moved on.

And he’s just someone that she used to know.

AtS, Cordelia/Angel, Luck & Ammo Are All You Need, PG

Again, I hope it makes a kind of sense. :)

~~

Shoot the fire and save the matches

Cordelia’s grandfather on her mother’s side was a grumpy old man who lived to be eighty-nine and a half. Cordelia’s mother was his only late-in-life child, and Cordelia was his dearest darling.

God willing and the crick don’t rise

Even though Cordelia grew up with all the careful lessons of her father and his parents, Papa managed to teach the girl some salty language from the generation that came right before the Greatest one.

She used the words because she could, but finally stopped when Daddy frowned at her one too many times. It didn’t mean anything, no one said those things anymore, no one would even know what she meant when she said them, he admonished her.

“Angel!” She called right before the warehouse reverberated like a giant bell that got rung, and he paused on the verge of diving into the portal, weighed with axes and a short sword, and turned to look at her, eyes battle ready. “Horseshoes and hand grenades!”

She doesn’t know why she said it, couldn’t begin to explain her Papa’s words ringing through her head for the first time in seventeen years, but Cordelia always said what she thought so she said it and held her breath.

Angel nodded and smiled before jumping, before she rushed from the building to find Wesley so that they could do the spell that would bring him back, before he was stuck there – wherever ‘there’ was – forever.

He would be okay; she knew that like she knew he understood what she was saying.

Because he got her.

Cordelia ran faster.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Dawn Summers. Fic

Prompt: Post The Gift - it should have the theme of Dawn's sacrifice in letting her sister die for her. Doesn't necessarily have to be Dawn's POV, though.

eilowyn
Jun. 30th, 2012 08:58 am (UTC)
This references some of my personal head!canon for the summer after The Gift.

BtVS, Dawn and Tara, Stories From Our Childhood, PG.

Tara was worried about Dawn.

After Buffy's death the previous May, Tara had expected Dawn to act out somehow - rage at them, become petulant, try and somehow get their attention away from their own grief to get them to notice how lost and alone she was. Instead, she withdrew into herself.

Only Spike really got her to talk, when she'd join him out on the back porch while he smoked and told her stories about meeting The Beatles and winning jitterbug contests and being only just too late to get into their berths on the Titanic. These were sanitized versions of his adventures with Drusilla, Tara knew; they were probably late to catch the Titanic because they were off eviscerating a small family or something. But Dawn listened, then opened up. From her place near the open kitchen window, Tara heard Dawn tell Spike a story about when Buffy went to see Titanic three times in one day because she just couldn't get enough Leonardo DiCaprio. It was the first time she really mentioned Buffy since her death.

It was Xander's idea to give Dawn one of Willow's old laptops. Perched at the dining room table, Dawn would spend hours on the computer, existing in a virtual world that was hopefully kinder to her than the real one. Tara encouraged the younger girl to find little niches of the internet where she could pursue her interests; that's how she got onto all the Harry Potter websites. They were reminders of fond moments with her mother, and Dawn guarded her actions like a troll hoarding gold. She once showed Tara what she was doing those long hours at the keyboard, and Tara marveled at how strongly Dawn's id was on display.

Dawn had been writing fanfiction.

She had been wring a long, multi-chaptered story where Hermione wasn't an only child and Voldemort captured her and her little sister, only to be rescued by a turn-cloak Draco who got them back to Harry and Ron successfully. Dawn certainly had a thing for white-blond bad boys.

The Harry Potter thing gave Dawn something to focus on during the summer; she'd use the books for reference and her own imagination for guidance. Once Tara had confessed to Willow that she worried Dawn could stumble onto some of the corners of fandom that were less than appropriate for a fifteen year old to be hanging out, but Willow reassured her that she'd checked Dawn's browsing histroy once after the girl had gone to bed, and nothing untoward was happening. Tara wasn't sure she liked that Willow had been almost spying on Dawn, but Willow seemed so preoccupied with something lately that Tara wasn't sure about much having to do with her girlfriend.

So life continued to exist at the house on Revello drive; Tara watched Dawn during the day while Willow went on a research bender at the Magic Box; Xander and Anya brought pizza for dinner, then Spike would come up from the place in the basement where he'd been sleeping since Buffy's death and care for Dawn while the others went on patrol. Dawn's attention would waver when they'd get a call from Giles every few days, but mostly she just surfed the web, content in the little world she had been constructing.

Tara worried that Dawn was spending too much time on the internet, but Spike had interjected, saying that don't we all wish we could go back to a time when the stories of our childhood were real to us? This fantasy world Dawn had affixed herself to was real to her, and maybe that was all Tara needed to worry about.
